Our favourite book is Safiyyah’s War by Hiba Noor Khan. This book won the 2024 Jhalak Prize.

Hiba Noor Khan is a well-known author of Pakistani descent who has written many award-winning books. She grew up in England.

Safiyyah’s War is a historical fiction novel, inspired by the true story of how the Grand Mosque of Paris, along with the help of the French resistance, saved the lives of hundreds of Jews during World War II.

Hiba Noor Khan weaves a breathtaking tale of suspense, compassion, and courage, starring an extraordinary young heroine readers will never forget.

Safiyyah despises the brutal Nazi occupation of her city, even though her Muslim identity keeps her safe – for now, at least.

Her Jewish neighbours and friends are all in danger; some have fled, and some have mysteriously disappeared into the mosque office along with her father. It’s up to her to find out what her father is doing. Will she succeed in her mission?

This book teaches readers what people experience during war and the emotions that sweep through their minds.

When the war hit Paris, it created a frantic scene, and many people lost their beloved families. Every person who reads this memorable book loves it.
