A seven-year-old Chinese boy was sent to an intensive care unit after drinking two iced drinks. Many people on Chinese social media have been talking about this case.
The boy lives in central China’s Henan province. He went to the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University.
He had stomach pain and was vomiting. Doctors said that he had acute volvulus. This is when a loop of intestine twists around itself and its supporting organ.
Huo Yufeng is a doctor at the hospital. He said the child’s bowels had serious necrosis, or death of cells and living tissue. He said the boy had been playing outside in the hot weather and asked for an iced cola. Then, he asked for iced milk tea.
Drinking too many iced and sweet carbonated beverages was the cause of his pain, according to Huo.
Medical experts in China tell children, especially those under three years old, to avoid drinking a sudden large amount of iced water on hot days. Traditional Chinese medicine advises staying away from iced drinks on hot days. Iced drinks could block your qi, or energy.
