About two-thirds of students in Hong Kong who requested a reassessment of their university placements due to revised entrance exam scores are expected to receive more favourable outcomes than those they were initially assigned.
On Thursday, the office responsible for the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (Jupas) announced that it had received 453 requests for reconsideration after the re-evaluation of Diploma of Secondary Education results.
Of those, 287 applicants, or 63.4 per cent, will receive a university admissions offer or better offers than before, up from 58.6 per cent a year earlier.
Thursday’s results marked the highest reconsideration success rate since 2018, when 65.4 per cent of applicants received an improvement in their allocations.
Among the requests received by the admissions body this year, the office said that 204 applicants with main round offers would receive a “better” degree offer following the reconsideration, while 83 applicants who had not received an offer would receive one.
Students who believe they should have received better DSE results can appeal to the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority to have their tests rechecked.
Should their results be upgraded upon rechecking, students can then apply to Jupas for reconsideration of their university offers. Historically, anywhere from 50 to 65 per cent of applicants receive a change in offer each year.
Earlier in August, the Jupas office said that 34.3 per cent of applicants, or 15,619, were offered places at local universities or on subsidised diploma courses under the system.
It also noted that the total number of applicants had increased by about 5.3 per cent year on year to 45,545. In comparison, 15,808 of last year’s 43,269 applicants secured places.
This year, 58,487 students signed up for the DSE exams, with 25 students from 16 schools scoring perfect marks, breaking last year’s record of 17.
