Being kind is one of the most important things you can do. From sharing your favourite toy to saying “thank you” when someone helps you, there is never a bad time to spread kindness. Not only does being kind make you feel good, but it can brighten someone else’s day. This holiday season, spread some happiness with these five small acts of kindness.

Hold the door open for someone

Whether leaving a restaurant or entering a shop, holding the door open is always a kind gesture. If someone is walking behind you, remember to keep the door open as you enter. It is always best to help others. You never know if someone may be having a bad day.

Write a letter of gratitude

There are many people around you who care for you. Take a moment to sit down and think about everyone you are grateful for, like family, friends and teachers. Then, get a piece of paper and write a letter to these people. Include everything you appreciate about them. Not only will this help you express your emotions, but you can strengthen your bond with them.

Simply smile

Everyone is so busy, and you never know what another person is feeling. In the same way that flowers blossom when the spring begins, smiling at someone can make their day a little more vibrant. If you see a stranger or are meeting a friend, smiling will show them your love and kindness and make them happier.

Pick up litter on the street

When you go outside, you often see cleaners picking up bits of food or rubbish that people have left behind. These cleaners work very hard. Many of these workers are elderly, so it is nice to help them out. Even if you are on your way somewhere, simply pick up any trash along the way and throw it in the bin.

Give back to the community

When the holiday season comes around, we can show our generosity and willingness to help. Many people in this world are not as lucky as you. Encourage your family and friends to take part in helping the community. It can be anything from buying a warm meal for someone in need to participating in a beach clean up. Every action you take will spread joy and positivity.

Before you read: Answers will vary.

Stop and think: A letter of gratitude can strengthen your relationship with that person. The letter will make them feel appreciated and cared for. It will remind the receiver that they are doing a great job and that they are valuable in your life.

Consider: Answers will vary. (Collecting money for charity, volunteering, picking up rubbish, doing something kind for a neighbour.)
