This is not an easy situation to be in, and you might be worried about what others think. Let’s try to get to the bottom of this together.

Maybe the smell is not coming from you. It might be something nearby and people are mixing it up. Ask a grown-up you trust to help you figure out the source of the smell.

What if it’s me?

There is a possibility that you can’t smell yourself. A trusted adult could help suggest a product that works well. Switching to an antibacterial soap can make a big difference. These soaps help kill the bacteria on your skin that can cause odour. You could also try a stronger deodorant or antiperspirant.

Why can’t I smell anything?

Our bodies get used to our own scents. There may also be a medical issue affecting your ability to smell. It is nothing to be scared of and is something a doctor can easily check for you.

How do I feel better?

You should chat with your teacher privately about the complaints. They can help stop any bullying and make sure everyone is being kind. Remember, true friends and nice people won’t make you feel bad on purpose. If it feels like bullying, that’s not OK. You deserve to feel safe and happy at school.

This question was answered by Ken Fung, a clinical psychologist, director of therapy and counselling at Jadis Blurton Family Development Centre and founder of Your Relationship Clinic
