Maintaining good hygiene is a key life skill. Healthy habits can protect us from harmful germs. Learning these practices early on helps us create routines that last for a lifetime. It also gives us a sense of personal responsibility.

Home hygiene habits

The best place to begin your hygiene journey is right in your own home. You can help keep your living space tidy.

Talk to your parents about cleaning chores you can help with. Then, use the table below to organise your weekly cleaning schedule. Use the blank spaces on the left-hand side to think of a few more chores you can do.

Make your own soap

Materials

  • 2 cups of baking soda

  • 1 cup of cream of tartar

  • 1 cup of cornflour

  • 1 cup of liquid soap (like Dettol soap)

  • ½ cup of water

  • food colouring (optional)

  • essential oils (optional, for scent)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the baking soda, cream of tartar and cornflour. Ensure there are no lumps for an even texture.

  2. In a separate bowl, combine the liquid soap and water. If you want a certain scent or colour, add a few drops of food colouring or essential oils.

  3. Slowly pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Keep stirring to prevent fizzing and to get a dough-like texture.

  4. Once combined, use your hands to knead the dough until it becomes smooth and flexible.

  5. Put the dough into moulds or make it into other playful shapes. Let the soap dry for about 24 hours before using it.
