[1] Nasal strips are available without a prescription and are easy to use. However, ear, nose and throat specialists say they aren’t a sure-fire cure for snoring. The strips carry few risks beyond occasional skin irritation. This could happen around the area where the adhesive is applied, according to Germany’s Professional Association of Ear, Nose and Throat Doctors. People who snore do not need to worry about trying them.

[2] The experts say the strips only help in a small number of cases. They might be useful when snoring is caused by a narrowing in the nasal passage. This could happen because of a cold or allergies. A 2016 analysis reviewed multiple studies. It found that the evidence on nasal strips remains mixed. Some people respond to the treatment; others do not.

[3] Gently lifting the sides of the nose with the adhesive strip can provide some relief in cases of clogged and narrow nasal passages. However, the effect has not been proven scientifically. It has also not been proven that nasal strips provide more oxygen during sports. Your doctor will likely tell you that the cause of snoring often lies in the throat. In those cases, a strip on the nose is not useful.

[4] The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) advises people who snore regularly and feel tired during the day to see a doctor. These issues may indicate sleep apnoea. It is a condition where breathing stops and starts during sleep. Without treatment, sleep apnoea can lead to additional health problems. These include high blood pressure and an increased risk of stroke.

[5] These tips can help reduce or even stop snoring. Sleep on your side if possible. To avoid rolling onto your back, place a small pillow or a piece of foam behind you. Sleeping in a raised position using thick pillows or a foam wedge can also help. Ensure fresh air in the room but avoid draughts. The ideal bedroom temperature is between 14 and 18 degrees Celsius.

[6] Avoid eating too late, too heavily or too much protein in the evening. Avoid sleeping pills where possible. A doctor may also advise people who snore to lose excess weight.
